TRIBAL #13 (August 21, 2026)
Went to TRIBAL #13 by MTÜ Tuli ja Trumm at Veetorni Aed (Telliskivi 59a). One night, four stages, 20:00 to 06:00. Out of all of it, the thing that got me was the drum area around the bonfire - as a hands-on experience, not as a show you watch.
Drums around the bonfire
The main reason to go. An open drum circle around a live bonfire: djembes, frame drums, shakers - whatever you brought, there was a spot for it. The program had led circles (Taavi Ram early in the evening, later Indrek Himma and Ilja Nafigin), but in between the fire kept burning and open drumming continued all night.
I was specifically practicing synchronizing with other people. That is its own skill: you are not playing your part, you are listening to what is happening around you and finding the slot where your hit fits in. It is fascinating how a rhythm - and eventually music - emerges out of that. Nobody composed it; it assembled itself out of everyone listening to everyone else.
ANDRA MURU
At 23:00 ANDRA MURU performed live by the fire - an Estonian singer-songwriter who plays meditative, mantra-like music. After hours of collective drumming her live vocals landed on top of the rhythm as a separate layer: the drums kept holding the pulse, and the voice led. The strongest moment of the night.
About the bystanders
A separate observation: passers-by kept standing around the circle just watching. I felt a bit sorry for them - they were not feeling that working synchronization with the collective around the fire. The gap between "watching a drum circle" and "being inside a drum circle" is huge, and from the outside it is completely unreadable. All it takes is picking up a free drum and sitting down - but not everyone takes that step.
Atmosphere and the other stages
The organizers squeezed everything out of the venue:
- An old railway carriage that houses a hostel (Railrooms Traincar Hostel) - TRIBAL booked the whole thing, 7 rooms, for the night
- Train stage - a separate stage inside the carriage with its own disco
- Silent disco - headphones with multiple channels, so you can drop into your own rhythm in the middle of the crowd
- Hot tub, sauna and sauna rituals
- Torches, floodlights, a fire jam, open-air cinema under the stars
- Face painting, bazaar, catering
The event was a fundraiser - all ticket proceeds went toward a new community sound system and dunduns (bass drums). So you buy a ticket and also chip into something that outlasts the night.
Takeaway
Four stages is a lot, but for me the value was not in the DJs - it was in the one place where you are not a consumer. A fire, a drum in your hands, and a dozen people listening to each other. I will be back.
